Winners and Losers of 2015: Tokusatsu and Anime

It's almost the end of the year again. Fourth time I do this but second time it is Anime and Tokusatsu.
 
WINNERS
 
Female Blue Ranger Fans
Jyuuouger has the 5th female Blue Ranger in Super Sentai history. Also fans of Elephant Rangers are happy about the green elephant ranger.
 
Sailor Moon Crystal Fans
Second series of Sailor Moon Crystal will cover the Infinity Arc coming this summer which includes Sailor Uranus, Neptune and Saturn!
 
New Zealand
One of the objectives of Dino Charge was to advertise New Zealand as the TV/Film business was declining after many productions had left the country. The aim was to have a character from New Zealand and given the rest of the four Ranger actors were American, one native actor would not be among other New Zealand/Australian actors with American accents like in Disney seasons (sort of like Mystic Force but Richard B is Australian). Anyway, native Kiwi James Davies plays Chase, a New Zealander. Now has this had a positive effect to New Zealand film and tourism? I am not sure. But at least American kids are learning of another country that rarely gets spoken about in American Pop Culture.
 
 
LOSERS
Fans of more complex mecha
I don't really mind the Jyyuouger mecha but fans have called it 'an insult' and 'garbage.'
 
Fans of upgrades or different modes being slowly introduced
Fans have complained that Kamen Rider Ghost is quickly introducing different modes rather rapidly, once an episode. But Power Rangers have been blamed of this as well but since most Sentai and Kamen Rider have 50 episodes or so to slowly do so, this does have pacing issues.
 
Saban Brands' secret keeping
As much as Saban Brands wanted to keep secret about the female Red Ranger back in Samurai, fans already knew because of Shinkenger and also Carlos Pena revealed in a YouTube video that Kimberley Crossman was the Red Ranger. Also given that the episodes aired earlier in Latin America. Also when they wanted to hide that Cameron Jebo as the Silver Ranger for Super Megaforce, fans already tracked that he was Orion and found a pic of his back and his photo in a production room. I have to admit they did a good job at keeping secret Davi Santos as Ivan. As soon as Claire as cast as Kendall, fans deduced she would be purple (the glasses were a giveaway if you saw Kyoryuger). Also the eps of her becoming Purple aired in foreign countries before the US. They tried to keep it secret. Even in a interview video for World Wide Play with Yoshi and Claire, Yoshi Sudarso almost revealed Claire was a Ranger. The female Purple Ranger toy has been spotted and the description is vague on her identity but the episode aired today in the US on who she is. So what's the point?

Goseiger: Irian of the Queen Bee, Sarawareteiru of the Yosei, and Pikarime of the Shakokidogu. Only the first monster appeared in Megaforce.

Gokaiger had no female Commanders.

Go-Busters had none as the nature of Vaglass was gender-less but they all sounded male.

 Kyoryuger had Debo Kyawaeen that had two different forms. In Dino Charge, she was known as Memorella.

In Toqger, I don't think there were any females.

 In Ninninger, there is Futakuchi-one and Yuki-ona

Final Robo/Megazord Colors

I'm not talking about the secondary Megazord like Super Zeo Megazord, Rescue Megazord (Turbo), and Omega Megazord (Lightspeed) that were multicolored. I'm talking about the last one which can be one color but not belonging to one particular Ranger (most of the time Red) or it could belong to one. Like it could be of 5 Rangers like MagiLegend/Manticore Megazord but one solid color. It could belong to one Ranger like Gigant Bragi-Oh or a power-up like MaxOhJa/Mezadon Megazord or Lion Ha-Oh.
 
MaxOhJa/Mezadon Megazord
In Abaranger and Dino Thunder, it was red and black. It belongs to power-up of Red: AbareMax and Triassic Ranger.
 
DekaWingRobo/Swat Megazord
Made of five zords for an upgrade, mostly black with some red, blue and silver.
 
MagiLegend/Manticore Megazord
Made up of Five Rangers and two 'Zords' but as mostly white.
 
DaiVoyager/BattleFleet Megazord
It was made of five zords but mostly navy color.
 
SaiDaiOh/Rhino Steel Megazord
Since GekiChopper is mostly white and red, the zord itself is navy and white, I am counting this one. It is the final zord.
 
Kyouretsu-O/Paleomax Megazord
Even though it is a tri-colored zord, I am counting it since it only belongs to Red. It is mostly maroon (red) and black.
 
 
Mougyu Dai-Oh/BullZord
Red and Black, belonging to Shinken Red and in Samurai, to the Shogun mode upgrade.

 

Gosei Ultimate/Ultimate Megazord
Belonging to the upgrade of all five rangers. All silver.
 
LionOh (Go-Busters)
Belonging to all the Rangers, it was indigo and gold.
 
 
Gigant Bragi-Oh/____Charge Megazord
I don't know the Dino Charge name yet. The robo is mostly silver but with some gold, red and black It belongs to the Silver Ranger. But I consider it a final megazord and since most likely we will see all the Rangers in it.

Gold and black robo with some red belonging to the Rangers.
 
Lion Ha Oh
 Red and gold robo belonging to the upgrade of Red, even though it isn't really the last one and I know you were thinking I should add OhBlocker.

Yellow Ranger Genders

Counting Jyuuouger, there is 36 Yellow Rangers in Super Sentai. I decided to cover this because now after ten years, Toei has decided to have male Rangers again and twice in a row. Yellow Rangers started as male from the beginning in 1975 and started being female in 1984 after 5 Yellow Rangers. JAKQ, Battle Fever J, Changeman, and Kyoryuger were four series without Yellow Rangers. In 2013, there was no Yellow Ranger in Kyoryuger because reportedly Toei said it had to be female and they didn't think yellow female would be 'brave' enough to fight off a Zyudenryu (zord). So after that, they tried a male Yellow Ranger again. So far there has been 19 males and 17 females in Super Sentai.

In Power Rangers, there has been 19 official Rangers. 5 male Rangers from Sentai were turned female in Power Rangers (Mighty Morphin, Lost Galaxy, Lightspeed, Time Force and Wild Force). With Super Megaforce, we saw Dairanger as Legendary Squadron, Flashman as Supersonic and Maskman as Blitz (or Lightning). Since Kirinranger of Dairanger was male but female Yellow Super Megaforce Ranger became that ranger, we only saw the Legendary Squadron Yellow Ranger as female. We technically did not see the Yellow Prism Ranger (Flashman) on the show but we know she exists.

As fans guessed, Toqger (2014) would be skipped just like Go-Busters (2012) and Ninninger (2015) will be adapted in Power Rangers Ninja Steel (2017). Copyright notice was found by fans a few days ago. Saban has renewed with Nickelodeon through 2018. Also Judd Lynn will be the executive producer once again. Now next up is will the second season be called "Super Ninja Steel" or "Ninja Super Steel"?
 
"Saban's Power Rangers Ninja Steel starts deep in space, where Zircon is the reigning champion of the most popular intergalactic game show in the universe, and monsters battle to prove who is the mightiest warrior. Zircon is determined to become invincible by controlling the mythical Spirit Crystal, which contains six supernatural Ninja Power Throwing Stars. The only thing standing in his way is a new team of heroic teenage Power Rangers who possess the Spirit Crystal. The evil Zircon sends his warrior contestants down to Earth to steal the Crystal, where each epic battle against the Rangers is broadcast throughout the universe. Power Rangers Dino Supercharge - When Evil Stirs - Episode Review

[My computer has been lagging and the power went out in my house and won't be back in a week or two. I am currently uisng my niece's wifi at her house while babysitting her kids.]

"When Evil Stirs" 
We open to Tyler summarizing the last season in his journal. He says they returned t their normal lives. He misses his Energem. In Sledges ship, Snide says it is his turn and tells the Viviks and Blueheads that he is the boss now. He destroys a Bluehead. Snide becomes Heckyl, who apologizes for his other half. He can see Snide through a watch. Snide becomes Heckyl and he tells the Viviks to release the monsters (some being re-used suits from Mystic Force and Ninja Storm). Posandra cries for Sledge and then is okay for the snacks. Wrench brings up that Poisandra broke up with Sledge. Snide tells them if they don't side with him, he will destroy them. One tries leaving and is destroyed. Meanwhile Koda eagerly awaits letters from Chase and Shelby.

Shelby is in college trying to become businesswoman. Kendall interviews a new waiter, which turns out to be Heckyl, who she recognizes as the guy who saved her. Kendall excuses herself and he spies and sees where Shelby and Chase are. Hyde wants to attack Kendall for her gem. Kendall hires Heckyl. At that college, Colonel Truman... I mean Shelby's dad tells her he is proud of her and should stick to her studies. She is attacked. The other Rangers such as Chase in New Zealand, Riley on the farm and Tyler in his jeep are attacked. Tyler calls Kendall before being attacked. Kendall is worried about Tyler but Ivan isn't but they all decide to check on him anyway. Kendall, Koda and Ivan arrive at the site and they get frozen, except for Koda who discovers it was Ice Age. 

Ice Age freezes Koda's jacket as he escapes. Koda goes to the hideout (having driven badly) and tries calling Shelby. Tyler arrives. Koda says he was scared of the ice because he was trapped in ice for many years. It is shown how Kendall and Chase found him trapped in ice. Chase took him out with the Dino Blaze charger. Keeper greets them and tells Koda it isn't his fault, the other Rangers are safe because of the gem. Tyler has an idea. Koda and Tyler run to the monsters, seemingly transform and get frozen. But it was all a rouse, Snide finds just their uniforms inside. The real ones use Dino Blaze free the others. Tyler gives them their Energems. Snide introduces himself. They all morph and fight the villains.

Snide is about to transform, so he ducks and hides, changing into Heckyl, who can't show his true identity so he runs away. Purple Ranger attacks Ice Age. The Rangers call the Dino Spike and combined with Gold's attack, take down Ice Age. Jekyl demands the beam to be shot. Ice Age and Vivizords grow and the Rangers call their Megazords (T-Rex and Plesio). Dino Drive is activated, they use Plesio first with Pachy. They then call T-Rex and mix it with Plesio making Plesio Charge Megazord Rex Formation. They destroy the monsters. The Rangers return to the base happily. Koda saying they are his family. Phillip arrives and Keeper says their mission is to get the other two energems. They think Aqua Ranger is out there as Ankylozord was activated. 


 Review:
Ryan (Heckyl) continues to do a great job but there is still a lot of questions as to why everyone thinks Sledge is destroyed because there was no explosion. Also, Kendall's first transformation is a non issue, Also it is was cute that it was a Koda episode. Still interesting how the Rangers mention getting the Energems but nothing about the new villain Snide nor having to defeat the bad guys.

Power Rangers Dino Charge - Forgive and Forget - Episode Review

 Summary:
Heckyl is at the restaurant and making bad luck for people. Burt, a old rival of Riley makes fun of him and causes Riley to touch his Energem and tells him he will go against him in arm wrestling. The energem glows and Riley beats him, Kendall berates him. Heckyl's tattoo glows and he holds it and tells Chase that a girl is out there for him. He becomes Snide and he goes out of the kitchen. Wrench takes out of the venom of Stingrage to change it so the Rangers forget who they are. Snide says they will change the plan. At the base, Kendall is going to create a new mode for their Megazords---Dino Supercharge. Outside, Riley and Burt prepare to go in an obstacle course against each other. Riley uses the Energem. Riley falls and Heckyl helps him up. Riley doesn't understand why Burt is a jerk.

Heckyl convinces Riley to join a marathon. Sting Rage arrives and throws stings at them. Riley puts Heckyl behind a wall, he fights with Snide about the new plan, saying it might work. Riley fights Sting Rage. Heckyl takes a hit for Riley. Red, Black, Pink, Blue, and Gold arrive to fight Sting Rage and Tyler and Shelby de-morph. Tyler takes the stinger out of Heckyl and Heckyl forgets who he is, supposedly. The Rangers are about to take him into the base, Kendall is against it, they say he knows who they are and he forgot his memory. Kendall shows them the two stings, with new venoms. They give Heckyl an antidote, he says he knows they are Rangers and Shelby tells them not to tell anyone about the base. Heckyl looks at the Energems.

At the ship, Heckyl explains himself to Snide who thinks he should have gotten the Energems. He tells them that when they lose their memories, he can do it. Fury and Sting Rage dump venom into the lake. At the marathon, the infected water is put in the drinking after. Heckyl tries giving water to Riley but he rejects it for his sports drink. Riley says he will win the game fair and square without the gem. Riley goes past Burt. Burt takes a drink and forgets who he is. Tyler, Chase and Koda show off their abs in support of Riley. The Rangers forget their memories too as they drank the water, Riley tells Kendall. Heckyl takes Koda's Energem. Riley takes all the Energems to the base. Kendall gives Riley the antidote, telling him to not give them the Energems yet. Kendall sprays the antidote with the Plesio Charge Megazord. The Rangers' memories come back thanks to Riley, who gives them the gems back.

Burt runs from his friends and Riley sprays him. Their friends tell Burt that he helped him. Burt defends Riley to another guy who wants to drink the water. Heckyl enters the empty base and the Energems are gone. He turns back into Snide and calls Heckyl a fool. Purple sees they are putting more venom in the dam. She sends Tyler. The Rangers fight the monsters. The five blast Sting Rage. Gold and fury fight. Red puts Armor X on and blasts back. He does a spiral attack on Sting Rage. The Rangers do final strike on him. Magna Beam makes him large as he enters the dam. The Rnager ssummon T-Rex, Raptor and Para making Para-Raptor Formation and activate Dino Super Drive mode. It gets a new sequence and the saber appears. They have no mouthplates and new accents on the helmets and spikes. 

They fight Sting Rage. They do the final strike with his saber, putting all the chargers in it. They destroy Sting Rage. Fury has Curio fill drinks and he puts the memory venom in it. Heckyl makes a toast with the jailed monsters, saying Snide failed to capture the Rangers but he managed to get the base. Together they will storm the base but he drinks the venom and forgets. Heckyl goes to take a nap. Only Burt and Riley are running in the marathon, they are the last. Burt wants him to cross and wants the slowest rate. They cross together. 

Review:
Heckyl is a delight and Snide is kind of boring, just a grumpy voice guy. But Heckyl calling himself Heckyl to the Rangers is stupid, he should had had an alias. Or maybe he doesn't really care. Also, the Rangers letting Heckyl in the base was also idotic. I wish more people were on Kendall's side. Or even Keeper show up, where the heck is he? (Pun intended). Heckyl entering the base and his intentions are deliciously smart but the execution is questionable. Heckyl has only know the gang for a few episodes and he already knows how to manipulate them. Also, I wonder if we will ever find out how Heckyl and Snide became one as it seems they are too separate entities and not the same guy.

Hi the electricity (not internet either) went out last week and it should be back in a few days. Also I am starting school (some college classes) and I work so I know I will be too busy. I already stop posting the pictures of Sentai and Kamen Rider every weekend. I might still do the PRDSC episode reviews but not sure. This will continue until June or so (hopefully I will be back at full force in the summer). So I am not retiring but things will slow down here even more than before. This has happened before in my 16 years of doing websites and blogs.

Power Rangers Dino Supercharge - Nightmare on Amber Beach - Episode Review

 Episode Summary:
Riley asks Shelby how her accounting test went after she came out of college. She says her dad won't be happy with a B and he comes in to the diner. He says Watkins ice cream is the family business. Shelby reassures her dad, telling him he will re-take the test. He wants to quiz her and he leaves, she sighs. Heckyl tells her she looks exhausted. She says she will rest when she gets her A. He says in a sotto voice that she is sleep sooner than that. At the ship, Heckyl wakes up a monster called Nightmare. Heckyl then gives Shelby a pillow as a gift claiming it is from her father. She sleeps on the pillow. A pink dust enters her and she awakes to see Viviks. She attacks her friends believing they are Viviks. 

She breaks he pillow and the pink dust becomes Nightmare the monster, saying to see her in her dreams. Kendall tells them to go to the base where they examine her. There is no signs. Kendall analyzing the pillow, tells everyone not to sleep. They try to keep themselves awake with activities and studying. Chase and Koda play video games. Ivan and Riley sword fight and almost fall asleep. Kendall says until the pillow is destroyed, the spell will not break. It is time to open the cafe and they are still sleeping. At Sledge's ship, Nightmare tells Heckyl the Rangers aren't sleeping. Fury goes to 'wear' them out. 

Shelby's dad comes to her and sees she is studying about dinosaurs, saying she isn't a little girl anymore and business is the future. Shelby says its boring. (I said the same to my dad back in college) He tries to un-bore her in the kitchen, going over hamburger prices and shows her a sparklers burger with fries. He says he made $4 profit. Get some boring and make it fun with profit. The Rangers get called and they run out. Chase can't find Ivan. The Rangers fight Viviks. Viviks aren't easy to knock out, the rangers are tired. Ivan arrives and takes some out but attacks the Rangers. He falls down the steps. They figure he is sleeping, the purple dust comes out of his mind.

Outside the museum, they carry the Gold Ranger. Koda finds a pillow and breaks it. Riley and Shelby run to her test and bump into her dad. She asks if business won't make me happy. He reassures her. She leaves. He sees a little girl saying she wants to study dinosaurs, the dad reassures her. Shelby asks Riley if he thinks she will be good at running ice cream. He tells her he didn't want to be a cowboy at the farm while everyone wanted it and asks her what she wants. The bell rings and she goes without answering. Curio puts a pillow in Riley's helmet. (Irresponsible!) Riley falls asleep before hoping on his bike. 

Heckyl puts pillows on the other Rangers and they take naps. He takes their energems. Shelby walks in and see their energems and grabs them. Heckyl holds the pillow and walks towards her. Shelby thinks back to Heckyl with the package and pillows and figures she works for Snide and blasts a pillow, making them all awake. She tells them Heckyl is not their friend. Heckyl says they are all friends. Shelby has figured out it is a ploy. Kendall asks i he works for Snide. His tattoo glow and he becomes Snide. The Rangers point their morpher guns at them. Snide threatens them and leaves. Snide mentions not knowing where the base is.


Riley is about to give Fury his Energem when the Rangers stop him and Fury knock him on a container. The pillow is destroyed and Nightmare comes out. The Rangers morph and fight Nightmare and Curio. Nightmare becomes huge and the zords are called. They become Dino Super Drive mode and Pink gets the saber as well as Red. Plesio Charge and Ptera Charge Megazords are formed as well as Stego-Raptor formation. The three Megazords fight. (Red in Plesio, not Purple) The main megazord floats up, Pink does the final attack and they do the final strike to the monster. Shelby passionately discusses fossils at the museum to guests. Her dad has heard it. He tells her that business was his dream, not her dream, Dinosaurs is her passion. She got one last favor--a dinosaur ice cream cake for them all. 

Episode Review:
This felt like a Samurai episode, with the chatty voiceovers and the evil plot not going anywhere. At least the Shelby plot is moving but kind of boring. I did like that Heckyl got revealed and not too later on.  Keeper has no lines but appears at the end of the episode. I do like that Pink Ranger got the final strike in Dino Super Drive.
